Seattle traffic flow maps and color blindness

The Seattle Traffic Flow app for Android is a bit of an experiment in an attempt to assist those who have a color vision deficiency. One who is color vision deficient has a decreased ability to see color, or perceive color differences. This is potentially problematic if you are trying to differentiate traffic conditions on a map based on a color scheme.

By tapping the gear icon in the upper left corner of the menu screen you have the ability to customize the colors which are used to display traffic conditions.

Traffic conditions are cached on your phone for three minutes before a manual refresh will fetch updated data from the server.

The app is still being worked on so if you have any questions, thoughts or suggestions on how to make it better please feel free to send me an email.

Things to note with this release:

  • There are a LOT of cameras on the Seattle map and the tap locations are really small. Working on this.
  • The visual theme is being updated with each release.

*The Seattle and Tacoma traffic maps, camera images and data are provided by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).*
